About

This post is also available in: Spanish

JUANELE AR is a blog, which you’re reading right now, and is usually updated 3 times a week. Sign up for The Juanele Weekly and keep up-to-date on the arts scene in Buenos Aires. JUANELE AR is written by foreigners and Argentines.
JUANELE AR conducts art and graffiti tours in San Telmo; book a space here. We also conduct custom tours and full-service art tours for the collector. We offer a limited number of free tours to Spanish-language students who are also studying English.
JUANELE AR hosts free parties, events and shows in Buenos Aires. Our latest show was a rather rowdy musical tribute to Johnny Cash but we also sponsor graffiti-painting parties, spoken word events, gay pride parties, and anything else we can think of to have fun and bring artists and art-lovers together. We often offer our fabulous office space for free to interested non-profit organizations.

MISSION STATEMENT

As a group of Argentines and foreigners who love the Argentine art scene, we strive:

To promote Argentine art and artists in English.

To create a virtual space where artists can promote themselves and others without financial or creative constraints.

To ignore categories of high and low, street and gallery, pop and academic, well-known and emerging.

To appreciate those differences but to never let them become values.

To be an independent source of information on the arts, a locus of networking and hopefully, inspiration. We are self-funded. What we say and do is what we mean.

To bring together people who thought they had nothing in common.

WHO WE ARE

Conyers Thompson funds Juanele AR and pays our salaries.

Rick Powell writes, edits, designs and photographs for Juanele. Rick founded the San Telmo Art Walks, conceived of Juanele, chose its name and guides its aesthetics. He’s sometimes nostalgic about having been homeless in Prague.

Gabriela Schevach writes, edits and photographs for Juanele. Besides writing elegantly in English as a second language and making sure we don’t miss anything important, she knows all the words to the Paris Hilton Sex Tape.

WHO IS JUANELE?

Argentine poet Juan Laurentino Ortiz, born in Entre Ríos Province and eventually nicknamed Juanele by his fans, wrote poetry “characterized by delicacy and a contemplative disposition which often referred to rivers, trees, floods, and the changes of the seasons without skirting the social history of his home province.”‘

While we won’t be writing about floods much, we’ve appropriated his name to suggest a personal, accessible contextualized approach to understanding and appreciating the art of Buenos Aires. We like the image of the long look because we think that’s what it takes.

Your opinion may be different and, after all, will be the final say should you decide to buy something.

Hi Rick & Gia, Joe from Livefyre here! I just wanted to stop by and introduce myself. If you ever have any questions or feedback about your commenting platform, please feel free to contact me directly.

Also, I wanted to tell you how much I love your website. I'm a huge fan of street art and graffiti, so I'll make sure to check back often to see what's going on in the Argentine art scene. Cheers!

Livefyre is by far the best designed commenting system I've tried. most of the old timers like disqus slow the site down. And it's fun to use.

And thanks for the kind words about our site. We've had a few fun discussions thanks to livefyre.

Rick Powell, JUANELE AR I can speak for the whole livefyre community team when I say, thank you! I'm not kidding about the site either, I'm fascinated by street art and I love some of the stuff I've seen come out of South America. I must admit, my knowledge of Buenos Aires is poor, but I've read a lot about Os Gêmeos (they even did a huge mural on Market street here in SF: http://bit.ly/kZ2ZjH ) and several other artists from the São Paulo area. I have your site bookmarked and I'm looking forward to getting to know you both!
